2013 EDUCAUSE keynote inspires transformational thinking

Sir Ken Robinson, author of Finding Your Element and Out of Our Minds was the keynote speaker at this year's EDUCAUSE. Below are relevant takeaways from his address: Leading a culture of innovation at the EDUCAUSE 2013 Annual Conference

Overall, his advice is that there is an ongoing revolution taking place, and if we are to survive as a planet we need to think more radically than ever before. If we are impressed by what’s been achieved, we’ll be amazed by what lies ahead.

Basically, he submits that the “problem with education reform is that it is coming up with an answer to an old system. The current model is predicated on industrialization” Getting a degree and landing a job after graduation was achievable in previous decades; now it’s a challenge that has become even more challenging, costly and in unfortunate cases a disappointing dead-end.

Nevertheless “education is still the answer” despite the current crises – a poor economy, unemployment, underemployment, limited jobs for graduates, etc.. However, Robinson says “we” need to rethink how we think about education and be creative in order to create sustainable opportunities and a future.  And we should not ignore the role technology plays in this loose formula of revolutionary ideas that integrates: culture + value + innovation.  “The seeds of growth for a new system are all around us.”
